The world is changing and so is the way we learn at school. People prefer to learn from home now. Instead of going to school, the school has now come home. I got an opportunity to design Ontario’s best online school — Learning Beam Academy. My client got in touch with me to design UI/UX for his school and here is how it went.

The Task

To build an online school management portal where parents can enroll their students in several academic courses. Parents can track progress their child is making and teachers can connect with parents and students to give feedback and grades.

Brainstorming & Discussion

I got on a discussion call with my client to understand his requirements & goals. We discussed his competitors in the market and how we can overtake the competition to provide better services to parents, students, and teachers.

Here are some points from our discussion:

  • Students should be able to browse through all courses available and to get a demo for each course.
  • Parents can view student’s progress, grades, and remarks.
  • Teachers can add events, check attendance, give grades & remarks to students.
  • Admin has the right to check & edit timesheets, attendance, courses

Userflow Diagrams

After understanding the requirements, I was able to sketch a user flow map. There were 4 types of users: Student, Teacher, Parent, Admin. Here is how the user flow diagram looked.

Design

Once the user flow maps were approved, we started making high-fidelity mockups of the product. We had 4 types of users — The student, teacher, parent, admin. The email ID of the user was used to recognize the type of user.

Student: can apply for courses, submit assignments, complete quizzes, check grades, create and read discussions.

Teacher: can check the quizzes and assignments and provide grades/comments. They can also check the grade report of students.

Parent: the parent could view the progress report of the student. he/she could also check grades/comments from teachers.

Admin: The admin can create events and upload courses, see time logs

Conclusion

This was a vast project and I am happy that I was able to finish it on time and with great quality. My client was very impressed at the end when I presented the whole product to him.
